Full-Day Meteora Trip from Thessaloniki by Coach

Meteora sits in central Greece, at the north-western edge of the Thessaly plain, about 235 km south-west of Thessaloniki. The name means “suspended in the air”, and that is close to literal: sandstone pillars rise up to 400 metres out of flat farmland, with monasteries built on top of them from the 14th century onwards. UNESCO listed it in 1988 as one of its rare mixed sites — cultural and natural at once.

We leave central Thessaloniki at 07:30 and reach Kalambaka, the town at the foot of the rocks, a little after 11:00 — 235 km and about three hours: motorway as far as Larissa, then the Larissa–Trikala–Kalambaka road, with one coffee stop on the way. You go inside two working monasteries, stop at the best viewpoints and get over an hour free in town.

The coaches are ours and the driver knows the road. You are back in Thessaloniki by about 19:00.

Your day, step by step

1. 07:15
   First pick-up at the White Tower

   Your escort is waiting on Nikis Avenue, opposite Thessaloniki's landmark waterfront tower, holding an Exit Bus sign. Come ten minutes early so we can leave on schedule. Coffee happens on the road, not here.

2. 07:30
   Departure from Aristotelous Square

   The main pick-up, at the seafront end of the city's central square, on Nikis Avenue. Most of the group boards here and this is the time the day is measured from.

3. 07:45
   Last pick-up, then out of the city

   We stop at KTEL Macedonia, the intercity bus station on the western edge of town, which is directly on our route. From there we join the motorway heading south towards Larissa.

4. 09:20
   Coffee stop on the Thessaly plain

   Twenty-five minutes at a motorway service area before Larissa. Restrooms, decent coffee and something to eat if you skipped breakfast. Back on board at 09:45.

5. 11:15
   First view above Kastraki

   We come past Trikala and within minutes the rock pillars are towering over you. Our first stop is the viewpoint above Kastraki, the village at their base, where several of the six working monasteries line up in one frame. Holy Trinity and St Stephen sit on the eastern side and come into view later, from Kalambaka.

6. 11:45
   Inside the first monastery

   We drive up to the first of the day's two monasteries. Entrance is €5 per person, paid in cash at the gate. Allow about forty minutes inside, including the stone steps cut into the rock.

7. 13:00
   Inside the second monastery

   A short transfer by coach brings us to the second monastery. Which two we visit depends on the date: each one closes on a different weekday and more of them close in winter. Your escort confirms the day's pair on the coach that morning.

8. 14:10
   Free time in Kalambaka

   We drop down into Kalambaka, the town directly beneath the rocks, and you have just over an hour to yourself. Tavernas with a view of the cliffs, a quick souvlaki or simply coffee in the square. Lunch is not included and we do not march you into a set restaurant.

9. 15:15
   Heading back to Thessaloniki

   Everyone back on board and we start the return leg. We leave deliberately early so you are home before dark without the driver having to rush.

10. 16:50
    Second break

    Another twenty minutes at roughly the same service area as this morning. The rest of the drive runs straight through.

11. 18:45
    Back in the city

    We drop off first at KTEL Macedonia, then Aristotelous Square around 19:00 and finally the White Tower at about 19:10. These times are realistic, but traffic on the way into Thessaloniki can move them by a quarter of an hour.

Group & private pricing

Know before you go

• The dress code is checked at the gate and it is stricter than simply modest. Women need a skirt at or below the knee and covered shoulders — several monasteries refuse trousers and jeans. Men need long trousers and sleeves. Some gates lend wrap-around skirts, but we cannot promise one will be there.
• Monastery entrance is not included: €5 per person at each monastery, cash only, and there is no combined ticket. Budget €10 per person for the two we enter. Children under 12 go in free.
• Every monastery closes on a different weekday and the schedule changes with the season, so we deliberately do not name them in advance. We pick the two that are reliably open on your date. On Saturdays and Sundays all six are open.
• Winter season runs 1 November to 31 March: opening hours are shorter and more monasteries close, so the timings above can shift by up to an hour.
• Sunset at Meteora does not fit into a day trip. We leave Kalambaka at 15:15 to be back the same evening, and the monasteries themselves shut in the late afternoon. If sunset matters to you, book the private version with a later return.
• The monasteries are reached by long flights of steps cut into the rock and are not wheelchair accessible. Wear comfortable shoes, and tell us in advance about any mobility limits so we can choose the easier pair.
• Photography is fine in the courtyards but not inside the churches and museums. Flying a drone requires official authorisation.
