Petralona Cave & Halkidiki: Prehistory and an Afternoon Swim

Petralona Cave sits on a hillside in Halkidiki, the three-pronged peninsula that hangs below Thessaloniki, about 50 km and under an hour from the city. A local shepherd found the opening in 1959; a year later a group of villagers pulled a human skull out of the rock wall. Known as the Petralona Archanthropus, it is the oldest human fossil ever found in Greece, and its age is still argued over.

The cave reopened in March 2024 after five years of works, and its museum in August 2024. Underground you walk a lit route for about thirty minutes at a constant 17°C, so bring a layer even in August.

Then we drive down to the coast: three and a half hours at Nea Moudania to swim and have lunch, a short seafront stop at Nea Kallikrateia, and back in Thessaloniki around 17:15.

Your day, step by step

1. 08:15
   White Tower: first pick-up

   Your escort waits on Nikis Avenue, at the stop opposite the tower, holding an Exit Bus sign. Please arrive five minutes early. Today's driving is light — about 65 km to the sea — but we leave on time so we reach the cave before the crowds.

2. 08:30
   Aristotelous Square: departure

   The main pick-up, at the corner of Aristotelous and Egnatia by the Venizelos statue. We check names, hand out water and set off. Tell the escort here if you have children with you: under-18s enter both sites free and we want that sorted before the ticket desk.

3. 08:45
   KTEL Makedonia, then out towards Halkidiki

   Last pick-up inside the city, at the intercity bus station on Giannitson Street, and we join the ring road. On the way the escort explains exactly what you pay and where: admission is bought at the desk on the day — EUR 10 for the cave and EUR 5 for the museum, two separate tickets, EUR 15 per adult in all.

   Thessaloniki Airport (on request)

   SKG sits directly on the road to Halkidiki, so this stop costs nobody any time. It only happens if it was requested at booking. On the way back we drop here first, at around 16:55.

   Petralona: up onto Katsika hill

   The cave is 300 m above sea level, a kilometre above Petralona village, looking out over the plain to the Thermaic Gulf. You buy your tickets at the desk and walk up to the entrance. A small shuttle train runs for anyone who would rather not do the climb, about EUR 3. Get your jacket out now, not later.

   Inside the cave

   The underground visit lasts around thirty minutes on a lit walkway, led by the site's own staff. The cave covers 10,400 sq m with roughly 2,000 m of passages; you see the developed section. It holds a steady 17°C with heavy humidity, and photography is strictly forbidden — the staff do enforce it.

   The Petralona Cave Museum

   A few metres from the entrance. This state museum reopened in August 2024 after a redisplay costing over EUR 2.5 million. It covers the skull pulled out in September 1960 by a group of villagers led by Christos Sarigiannidis, the animal bones recovered from the cave floor, and how palaeontologists actually date a find. You get about forty minutes.

8. 11:30
   Down to the Thermaic Gulf

   Half an hour from the hill to the coast, through the olive groves and vineyards of north-western Halkidiki. Halkidiki is the three-pronged peninsula below Thessaloniki; we are on the first prong's approach, the calm, everyday side rather than the resort strip. The escort runs through the practicalities of Nea Moudania.

9. 12:05
   Nea Moudania: arrival

   We drop you at an agreed point near the seafront. Nea Moudania is a working town rather than a resort: a port, a marina, pharmacies and supermarkets, with the sandy beach starting inside the town itself. You will not need a taxi to reach the water.

    Free time: swim and lunch

    Three and a half hours, unscheduled. Most people swim first and eat fish at the marina afterwards. We do not march you into a particular taverna and we take no commission from any of them. Boarding at 15:45, at the exact spot where you got off.

11. 16:10
    Nea Kallikrateia: a stop by the water

    Twenty minutes on the seafront promenade, back on board at 16:30 of the last coastal town before the city. Coffee, ice cream, a final quick dip if you are fast. Out of season the stop stays in the schedule, just with something hot in the cup.

12. 17:15
    Back in Thessaloniki

    Drop-offs in geographic order: the airport around 16:55 for those who asked, White Tower and Aristotelous around 17:15, KTEL Makedonia last. Friday and Sunday afternoons the road back from Halkidiki is busy, so allow twenty minutes' margin if you have a flight or train to catch.

Group & private pricing

Know before you go

• The cave holds a steady 17°C with high humidity all year round. Bring a light jacket or cardigan even if it is 35°C outside, and wear closed shoes — the walkway is wet and flip-flops slip.
• Photography is strictly forbidden inside the cave, with or without flash, and the staff enforce it firmly. You can photograph freely in the museum and outside the entrance.
• Admission is NOT included, as with every operator on this route: EUR 10 for the cave and EUR 5 for the museum, EUR 15 per adult in total (2026 rates, no combined ticket exists). Under-18s and EU citizens under 25 enter both free with ID or passport. If you have seen EUR 8 quoted for the cave anywhere online, that figure is out of date.
• The underground section is a thirty-minute walk on a built, lit path. This is not caving — you will not squeeze through passages. If you are expecting hours below ground, this trip will disappoint you.
• The cave and the museum open daily, 08:00-20:00, with no weekly closing day, so Tuesday departures run as normal. The only full closures are 1 January, 25 March, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25-26 December, and we do not run on those dates. Good Friday and Holy Saturday have shortened hours, so ask us before you book one of those days.
• The swimming half of the day realistically works from mid-May to mid-October. Outside that window the Nea Moudania stop becomes a harbour-front and market walk at a correspondingly lower price — we do not sell you a beach in January.
• Accessibility: the museum was refurbished in 2024 with accessibility works and can receive visitors with reduced mobility. The cave cannot — there is a climb to the entrance, steps inside and a damp surface. Tell us before you book and we will be straight with you about what you would actually see.
