Skiathos Day Cruise from Thessaloniki by Coach and Boat

Skiathos is the closest of the Sporades islands to the Greek mainland: 50 km² of pine forest and more than sixty sandy beaches, lying off the coast of Thessaly. It is not, however, close to Thessaloniki. Reaching it means a 260 km coach run south to Achilleio, a small port on the western shore of the Pagasitic Gulf, and then a crossing by sea. Both legs are in the price, return boat ticket included.

You step ashore in Skiathos Town at 11:30 with a little over two hours to walk the old harbour and the Bourtzi headland. The boat then carries you round the coast to Koukounaries, the island's best-known beach, for a long swim stop straight off the deck — no island bus, no taxi.

It is a long day: pickup at 04:00, back around 23:30. It runs in high summer only, on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Your day, step by step

1. 03:40
   White Tower: first pickup

   Your escort meets you on Nikis Avenue, opposite the White Tower, holding an Exit Bus sign. We know the hour is brutal, so the coach is already cool and the lights are down. Coffee happens at the service stop, not here.

2. 04:00
   Aristotelous Square: departure

   The main pickup, at the top of the square where it meets Egnatia Street. A last stop at the Macedonia bus station at 04:15, then we join the national motorway heading south towards Larissa. Most people sleep until Katerini.

3. 06:10
   Coffee stop on the Thessaly plain

   Twenty-five minutes at a motorway service area just past Larissa. Toilets, coffee and something for breakfast — worth doing, because the queue at the boat's canteen is long in the first hour at sea. Back on the road at 06:35.

4. 08:15
   Achilleio, Magnisia: the port we actually use

   We leave the motorway at Almyros and drop down to the western shore of the Pagasitic Gulf, a large bay sheltered behind the Mount Pilio peninsula. Achilleio is the small harbour the Sporades excursion boats work from — not Volos, which is where the expensive scheduled ferries go. Your escort hands out tickets and we clear the passenger check.

   Casting off for Skiathos

   The boat sails out of the gulf with Mount Pilio rising on your left. The crossing takes two and a half hours, with music on deck and a steady breeze — claim a shaded seat early. Ahead of you is the channel between the mainland and the first of the Sporades islands.

   Skiathos: stepping off in the old harbour

   We tie up right in the middle of Skiathos Town, fishing caiques on one side and waterfront cafes on the other. Your escort gives you a map, the exact re-boarding time and a phone number in case anything goes wrong. From here until 13:45 the time is yours.

   Bourtzi and the town on foot

   Bourtzi is the small fortified headland that splits the harbour in two: the Ghisi brothers fortified it in 1207 as a lookout against pirates, and today it is an open public space with a cultural centre, an open-air summer theatre and a cafe. There is no ticket and no gate, and it is five minutes from the pier. Walk up for the view over the whole bay, then head into the lanes behind Papadiamantis Street.

   Back on board, sailing to Koukounaries

   We gather at the pier and the boat rounds the south coast of the island. It is three quarters of an hour past one beach after another, and on the way out you pass the famous low-approach runway of Skiathos airport. Koukounaries is 16 km from town by road — we arrive by sea instead, so there is no bus, no taxi and no waiting.

   Koukounaries: the long swim stop

   We anchor in the bay in front of the stone-pine forest that separates the Strofylia lake from the sea, a protected Natura 2000 wetland, which is why the green runs right down to the sand. You swim straight off the boat's ladder into deep, clear water. Two and a quarter hours here, with time to eat on deck.

    Weighing anchor for the mainland

    The return crossing is the best hour of the day: the sun drops, the wind eases and Mount Pilio turns into a silhouette ahead of you. Two and a half hours back into the gulf.

11. 19:30
    Back on the coach, with a proper dinner stop

    The boat docks at about 19:15 and we set off by road fifteen minutes later. At 21:00 we stop for thirty minutes near Larissa so you can eat something that is not a sandwich. After that it is two quiet hours north.

    Back in Thessaloniki

    We drop off at the same points, finishing at Aristotelous Square. If you need a taxi or have an early flight the next morning, mention it to your escort during the day and we will arrange it in advance.

Know before you go

• The coach leaves at 04:00 and you are back around 23:30 — 19.5 hours in total, of which roughly four and a half are actually spent at Skiathos. This is a long haul squeezed into one day, not a relaxed day at the beach, and we would rather you knew that before booking than after.
• The trip runs from 1 July to early September and only on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays. There are no daily departures and nothing at all outside the summer: the excursion boat simply does not sail this route for the rest of the year.
• The weather has the final say. If the meltemi wind closes the port we cancel the night before and you get a full refund or a transfer to another date, whichever you prefer. From your side, cancellation is free up to three days before departure.
• Greek maritime rules require a passenger manifest, so we need the full name and ID card or passport number of every traveller at the time of booking. Bring the document with you — it is checked at boarding.
• Pack a swimsuit, towel, hat and sunscreen. At Koukounaries the boat anchors in the bay and you swim from the ladder in deep water, so think it through if you have children who are not confident swimmers. The walk around town involves slopes and steps, so wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops.
• Boarding is via a gangplank from the quay and the boat has no lift and no accessible toilet, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users. Tell us about any mobility issues in advance so we can give you a realistic answer.
• There are tavernas and cafes all around the old harbour in town. At Koukounaries the boat does not come alongside any shop, so buy water early in the day — the on-board canteen runs out.
